Practicing What I Preach: Creating a Lifestyle I Can Love and Live With

I did quite a bit of downsizing in November and loaded up the CRV and headed out for Minnesota. I can hear the questions now – Why move? What in the heck is in Minnesota? And why would anyone from the east coast go there in the winter?

2008 into 2009 saw some major changes in my family life and work life. While professionally things have taken off (thanks to former, current and future clients), it has been quite a roller coaster in other areas. Have you ever felt like life was squeezing you, pushing you to do one of two things: fold or press. I opted to press by taking a good look at what I most needed to thrive and took action to create that in my life.

After some careful research, a few visits and just being willing to try something different, I settled on Minnesota. I know – it gets downright cold here, but I’d much rather deal with being cold than being hot. So I headed to the Midwest, to an area forecasted by Forbes magazine to be one of the best places for working moms. Between the universities and the corporate headquarters of 3M, IBM and Target, there are lots of professionals here to connect with and offer services as a career coach.

And while the timing may seem a little off – one of the things I’ve written about is procrastinating by claiming that we are waiting for the perfect time or until we have every last detail figured out. Anyone who chooses to live like that will surely miss out on a number of opportunities. There hardly ever is a perfect time. Our gifts and the world are much better served when we follow the nudge that our intuition gives us.

Bottom line – I am practicing what I preach. If I encouraged my clients to take roads less traveled and to take risks in order to create the life they want, but didn’t do the same, I would be a sham. Do I expect this next leg of my journey to trouble free – not at all. Rather I am confident that I am exactly where I am supposed to be to learn the next lesson life has for me.

By the way you can now find my articles under the St. Paul Career Coach Examiner and on the Minnesota Jobs Network job board.

WOW! What a courageous move. I applaud you for taking such a prudent risk. So many people are content to stay in a place of discontent rather that taking the plunge to do something challenging, but that will take them places – figuratively and literally – they never could have dreamed. God bless you and I wish you the best.

Thanks Paul. It definitely required a lot of faith. I am looking forward to all I’ll get to learn on this leg of the journey – especially about myself. Keep dreaming B.I.G.
