If you were to do a progress check on the professional goals you’ve set, would you be on target, playing catch up or totally off track? If you are not making the progress you expected, have you been in a holding pattern, waiting for the perfect situation or some other mythical milestone. Here’s a list of 21 things you can be proactive about, losing the wait that has been keeping you grounded.
Don’t wait:
- For people to like or approve of your vision.
- Until you think you know how everything is going to work out.
- To be recognized – find a way to shamelessly self-promote your wins.
- To take the initiative and showcase your problem solving skills.
- For opportunity – create your own.
- To build your network.
- For your manager to address performance gaps – create your own professional development plan.
- To thank someone for their help or recognize their performance.
- For someone else to solve the problem.
- To dream big and create a plan for making your dream come true.
- Until you feel like doing something. Your feelings will line up once you take the necessary actions.
- To ask for help. Reach out and reach up to create the support you need.
- To give back by mentoring someone with less experience than you.
- To update your resume showcasing the new skills and accomplishments you’ve acquired.
- For someone to appoint you to a leadership role – find a way to lead without the title.
- To finish your degree or complete your professional certifications.
- To make and take time for yourself.
- Until you have all the experience to go after a new role. Look for opportunities that will allow you to stretch.
- For someone to ask you to participate – ask to take the lead role in a new project.
- To disengage from unproductive work relationships and conversations that keep you disgruntled and frustrated.
- Discover and pursue your passion.
